WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) – The following are quotesfrom finance officials of the Group of Seven after theirmeeting on Friday in Washington:> For a text of the G7 communique, see [ID:nN24515491]> For latest stories on the G7 meeting, see [ID:nTRS000099] and[ID:nN24475650].> For story on the U.S. prepared statement after meeting, see[ID:nWEQ000930]> For a Take a Look of top stories on the G7, G20 and IMF,World Bank meetings, see [G7/G8] U.S. TREASURY SECRETARY TIMOTHY GEITHNER ON GLOBALECONOMY: “We are right to be somewhat encouraged, but we would bewrong to conclude that we are close to emerging from thedarkness that descended on the global economy early lastfall.” GEITHNER ON U.S. RECOVERY MODEL: “In the United States we want to have a recovery built noton a new hope of increased leverage and unsustainable levels ofspending but a more balanced kind of recovery in the UnitedStates. That’s why you see so early in this administration thepresident laying out investments and reforms that will helpmake our economy more productive over the long term.” “Internationally, as a complement to that, we want to see amore balanced pattern of growth, thus the reference to domesticdemand-led growth. I think if you look at the actions taken bya number of major economies you’ll see the embrace of thatbasic objective.” GEITHNER ON REMOVING STIMULUS WHEN RECOVERY BEGINS: “It’s very important that as we do these exceptional thingsto stimulate demand and to bring credit flows back that we alsodesign these programs in ways that allow them to be unwound, and walked back, and bring us back to the sustainable fiscalposition over the medium term.

That’s a critical part of ourstrategy, it’ll be critical to the sustainability of therecovery.” GEITHNER ON G7, G20 AGENDAS: “I would just say that in every meeting over the nextcouple of days and in every meeting that’s going to happen overthe next several months, it will be the same agenda. The agendawill be: What are we doing? Are we doing enough to helpattenuate the risks in this recession, lay the foundation forearlier recovery, lay the foundation for a more balanced, sustainable recovery and a set of reforms that will leave thesystem stronger in the future?” FSB CHAIRMAN MARIO DRAGHI ON GRADUAL STABILIZATION: “There are signs of gradual stabilization in the globaleconomy Certain spreads are going down, volatility isdecreasing.. (to) pre-Lehman levels.. in financial markets. But we have still to break the vicious circle between the realeconomy and the financial sector. This is why I am cautious.” DRAGHI ON TOXIC ASSETS: “We have to break the vicious circle between the realeconomy and the financial sector. We have to restart banklending and re-establish confidence in the financial sector. For this reason, we have to have transparency in the bankingsector. The IMF is absolutely right when it asks countries todeal with toxic assets because transparency is crucial forrecovery.” DRAGHI ON HEDGE FUND OVERSIGHT: “On hedge funds, FSB will work in the next months to haveconsistency among national regimes that will come in place inthe U.S., in the U.K and in Europe.

For example, there aredifferent registration procedures for hedge funds. In addition,FSB will review the scope of the financial regulation in orderto assure that all relevant actors are under oversight. The G20summit in London asked FSB to carry out these objectives.” DRAGHI ON EARLY WARNING SYSTEM: “I cannot comment on details of the early warning exercisebecause it will be presented tomorrow at IMFC. It was the firstrun of the procedure and it was done in an environment whererisks are all there, they are not a surprise. It is a firstrun, an exercise that will be repeated.” DRAGHI ON REFORM OF FSF: “FSF has become FSB. It has an expanded membership and itwill have greater legitimacy that will enhance itseffectiveness. The representatives of new countries are beingdesignated and FSB will double the size of its secretariat Iintend to stay at the helm of FSB.

FSB will meet in June.” Regulatory News  |  Bonds  |  Global Markets Regulatory News Bonds Global Markets.
