The UFO appeared to wait for the jet aircraft and then sped off to hover at a distance.. NEW TALKS on Cyprus that began yesterday at the United Nations offer hope of resolving a dispute dating from 1974 and the Turkish invasion. The hope is that the “proximity talks”, which Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, opened with Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders, might lead them to agree to meet face-to-face on reuniting the island.
Mr Annan’s modest objective, according to his special adviser on Cyprus, under- secretary general Alvaro de Soto, is “to prepare the ground for meaningful negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement”. The base commander ordered armed aircraft to pursue the object and, according to official accounts, the pilots reported seeing a mushroom-shaped dome with a flat bottom covered with bright, continually rotating lights. “UFO darts across the city’s skyline,” wrote the Shanghai Daily.
Other papers ran photographs of the object, while both the city’s television channels showed amateur video footage of the encounter.
Officials could not explain the incident, which came a little over a month after two Chinese air force pilots reported seeing a bright object shaped like a mushroom in the skies south of Peking. That encounter took place on 19 October, when four radar stations picked up an unknown moving target directly above a military flight training base near Cangzhou. THE CITIZENS of Shanghai are accustomed to bright lights, but a shining cylinder with a flaming orange tail took them by surprise when it hovered over the city for about 10 minutes
Nearly 100 people reported seeing the UFO. Even Shanghai’s staid official newspapers insisted that the sighting, on Thursday afternoon, was no illusion. The streets are full of football fans, some of whom patronise Mr Hareruya “One of them was a good fighter,” said Mr Hareruya “Bam! Bam! he came in hard. But he was no match for Akira Hareruya.”uON WEDNESDAY, it rains and Mr Hareruya stays in. He speaks on the phone to his wife who tells him, as she always does, that they have no money “I told her, `Please be patient. I will do my best.’ I told her I was OK.” He talks to his children, who cry when they speak to him “Please stop this, Dad Take care of yourself.”.
They only act when they’ve had a complaint.”uON TUESDAY, the Brazilian side Palmeiras lose one-nil to Manchester United in the final of the Toyota Cup, held in Tokyo. “They ask me if I have a permit, and obviously I’m not going to get a permit for something like this,” he says “So they ask me to leave, and I pack it in for that night. The police know me and, because I co-operate, they know I’m all right. “They still cry when I speak to them.” These days, he lives for most of the time with a friend, and rarely goes home.
