The 32-year-old Bath lock, Nigel Redman, has been called up for England’s tour of Argentina as a replacement for the Newcastle forward Garath Archer, who has a neck injury.
Another possible last-minute candidate for the six-match tour was Leicester’s Matt Poole, but he was unable to take any part in yesterday’s training session at Bisham Abbey because of a wrist injury.Redman won the last of his 18 caps against South Africa in Cape Town three years ago and has recently been out of the Bath first team while he concentrated on coaching the forwards. It should be corrected – and corrected soon.”Mauro also said that leagues and coaches need to make referees aware of players with special needs – but Katz said that had been done at the beginning of the season.Earl Fielder, the president of the Mid-New Jersey Youth Association, has ordered the game to be replayed Raj said he was happy with the decision. McLaren is to see a specialist about the knee injury which caused him to miss Euro 96 last summer.
Brown already looks set to include Christian Dailly of Derby and Brian McAllister of Wimbledon in his plans for the friendlies. Both are uncapped and two other candidates could be Steven Pressley of Dundee United and David Weir of Hearts. The injured midfielder, Billy McKinlay of Blackburn, is Brown’s other doubt.
The Scotland manager will name his squad for all three games tomorrow afternoon.. The Football League yesterday appealed for a unified plan of action to help replace Britain’s existing transfer system. The League is seeking a collective agreement between itself, the Premier League and the Professional Footballers’ Association in a bid to introduce much-needed changes in the wake of the Bosman ruling.
A special working party from the League has made a number of recommendations to form the basis of an agreement which they want to see in operation from July 2000. The timescale has been suggested to make sure lower league clubs, who must rely on transfer fees to keep afloat, have enough time to take the changes into account. He made some mistakes, bought some bad players, but that was the platform. A football club today is not like it was 20 years ago, it’s a big business.
After all, this undemanding amble around themes of duplicity and deceit began with an ordinary working man who owned a Rolls-Royce, decidedly third division stuff as far as the lying game goes. But it took them almost an hour and a half to part the pair, Croft, the first to go for a stubbornly correct 39.
Waqar followed a couple of overs later a tantalising three runs short of his maiden Championship half-century, one of McCague’s six victims in the innings. “I didn’t want to embarrass Ali, but when I mentioned Robinson’s name that old smile came to his face ‘Is he dead?’ he asked. It would have been enough for him to say ‘Jackie, you were great’ but, astonishingly, he went further, adding: ‘The greatest, the greatest of all times, greater than I ever was’.”Ali’s performance at an event put on for children in Pensacola, Florida, by the light-heavyweight champion, Roy Jones, surprised Wett even more.
“Roy persuaded Ali to get involved and, astonishingly, he got up on his toes and started shadow boxing Larry Merchant of HBO was there and shared my amazement ‘Did you see that?’ he said ‘For a few moments the light was back in his eyes’. By Deayton’s own rather broad definitions, I suppose you could describe this as a kind of facial lie. He does this quite often on Have I Got News for You, particularly when he can’t immediately think of a snappy response to some casual insult from Paul Merton And, indeed, the expression is effectively insinuating. It says something like “What I’m thinking is so witheringly scornful that I’m not even going to utter it aloud.” You can practise this yourself – deployed with the right timing, it might even earn you a reputation as a scathing wit.
The gesture in question got an early outing in The Lying Game (BBC1), a new series about deception. Deayton turns his head slightly in one direction, his eyes in the other direction and then he arches his eyebrows in a questioning manner. But he is also a living demonstration of how far a well- managed facial expression will take you. Angus Deayton is a likeable television performer – a welcome oasis of understatement in the whipped-up energy that characterises much TV presentation. But, as with his Unidentifiable Human Remains, seen here two years ago, Fraser seems too interested in cultivating a hip style of jump-cuts, trash-talk and stagy sensation to take pains establishing human depth. To 7 June ( 0161 833 9833). Both Hilary Maclean as Violet, and especially Adam James as the bemused Matt, give committed, urgent performances, and their row when she finds out about David is one scene that does seem ripped from life.Marianne Elliott’s production enhances such qualities, and, especially given Paule Constable’s intelligently precise lighting, disguises many of the play’s shortcomings. The degree to which David, with his predilection for “straight” men, may be lover or predator begins to make him complicated, but this is barely explored save for some vague recollections of – guess what? – sexual abuse.Ironically, it is the least exotic characters who have the most plausibility and depth.
